"I am in love with words. They can contain love and they can change people. They can shape our understanding, and they can be our weapon, or our guard. They grant us with humour, and self-reflection. Words are what give breath meaning, and they are one of the only things we have that will survive past our corporeal demise. Our words and our voices. Let us use both with sincerity, wisdom, passion, and creativity, and by that I mean love."
“one of the nation’s most alluring vocalists,” {The Calgary Herald} and “one of the most lyrically impactful vocalists” {Beatroute Magazine}.
From teacher and academic to an independent, Canadian singer songwriter, recording artist, storyteller, writer and painter, Orit Shimoni took to the road full-time in 2010. With her guitar on her back and a suitcase, back and forth across Canada and Europe, crossing barriers, boundaries and demographics, she has been singing her truths, her feelings and her stories wherever she’s found purchase to do so, in bars and clubs and cafes, in coffee houses and folk fests hall, theatres back yards and living rooms, and even on trains. In 2020, the pandemic hit and literally stopped her in her tracks and shut down all her options as a live performing artist and left her stranded and locked down in Winnipeg.
Bold and raw, soft and tender, witty and humorous, mixing things like empathy with condemnation, visceral with spiritual, or whimsy perhaps, to unveil a real violence, Orit’s folksy, bluesy, country lyrics and melodies and her haunting voice speak to the human condition, the human heart and the world and times that we find ourselves in. Every word demands attention and every song pierces the skin of its own unsettled ground, leaving you weeping perhaps, or silent or elated or enraged or something else entirely. She doesn’t hold back, and yet, we are carried forward still by her incredible balance and faith and optimism and hope.
Orit’s music has hit international air waves, getting radio play, and her albums have all charted on college-radio and gotten rave international reviews. Prolific, she has released twelve albums to date and has many more in store.
In a time where the value of art keeps diminishing in society, between streaming services that don’t compensate the artist, and the troubling increase of AI - she is fighting to keep the human soul alive, despite the challenges it faces, and is finding ways to keep songwriting her mainstay, despite the ongoing challenges the pandemic poses.
A special voice in a turbulent time, Orit Shimoni’s music is not to be missed.
